SUCCESS FOR SALENDINE NOOK!
Kirklees U14 Girls Basketball
Qualifyers at Whitcliffe Mount School on 8th February 10
One of Basketball England’s focus events saw 46 U14 girls from 6 schools across 3 of the districts 4 school sports partnerships take part in the first ever Kirklees Youth Games girl’s basketball qualification competition held at Whitcliffe Mount School on Monday 08th February 2010. Two teams from Salendine Nook and teams from the other Kirklees Sports partnerships participated in the event which was held, not only to provide the girls with active competition, but to establish a Kirklees qualifier who will represent the District in the West Yorkshire Finals and complete against schools from Bradford, Leeds, Halifax and Wakefield. The teams were split into 2 groups 4, playing each other in that group – the top placed team in each league would then play off in a winners final with second in each group playing off for 3rd / 4th place. In an extremely close contest, where both teams created opportunities, it was Salendine Nook B who registered the all important basket moments before full time to send them into the final and consign the hosts to the 3rd / 4th play off game. It was the Salendine Nook A team who ran out comfortable league winners, with 3 victories, to set up a final against their B team.
The final, between A and B from Salendine Nook provided a tense and close encounter with the B team emerging victorious with a 4-2 win and therefore qualifying for those West Yorkshire Finals which are to be held at Bradford College on March 11th 2010.
As important as one team being victorious, was the fact that this was another opportunity for a previously “untapped market” to compete in competition in a different sport. All the teams improved as the evening progressed and all enjoyed the occasion which was played out in a great atmosphere and good sportsmanship.
Many thanks to Whitcliffe Mount School for hosting the event, well done to all the girls who competed and best wishes to Salendine Nook for the next phase.
